Penny Keyes is a somewhat naive, mischievous girl. She's a sponge for information and she resents being called a little girl, but in the end she's only been alive ten years and the first two of those years were spent with Abigail's constant watching. She's lively, with the raw intelligence to make something of herself if she wasn't hindered by the fact that she doesn't legally exist.
Once there was a girl. No, not Penny. Abigail Keyes was a real girl, a sweet girl, and all of ten years old. And her best friend in all the world was a little porcelain doll, who she called Penny.
Abigail loved Penny dearly, and kept her close, and wished with all her heart that Penny was a real girl. And along came a faerie, who granted that wish. Penny was alive, but still a doll. Walking and talking, but still a doll.
And with this new life came a new companion. One of Abigail's Beanie Babies followed Penny into life. A tiny penguin, one of the tiny animals that came with Happy Meals. The penguin's name was Chills, and he told Penny his job was to keep her in line and keep tabs on her. Penny locked him in Abigail's music box until he swore not to be a spy.
Alive or not, Penny wasn't satisfied with being a doll, and neither was Abigail. They spent years searching for a way to make Penny into a real girl. Along the way came adventure. At some points they were separated; at all points they were tailed by Chills.
Abigail, in the end, was taken captive by a creature she tried to strike a deal with for Penny's humanity. Penny saved her and obtained real life as a reward for saving her girl.
Time's passed. Abigail's not a little girl anymore. Penny's been a real girl for years. Abigail brought her "little sister" to college with her, but somewhere along the way she stopped wanting to spend time with Penny. Sisters grow apart, and as much as Abigail would always be Penny's girl, Penny wasn't Abigail's doll anymore.
Penny did some things she shouldn't have. Got her hands on identification that looked legitimate, documents that could get her through anything short of an airport. She went to school on her own, without Abigail. She graduated high school, went on to college. Her fake identification was put to the ultimate test and managed to get her into a community college, where she started out majoring in acting before getting bored and switching to engineering.
Legally, Penny Keyes is nineteen years old. She doesn't vote, she's not an organ donor. Chronologically, she's only been alive ten years.
